Lecture: Reform of the UN treaty bodies (by Li Xiaomei)

April 14, 2015 - Li Xiaomei, Ph.D candidate of the human rights law, who also has a very rich practical experience, gave a lecture to the students majored in human rights. Professor Sun Meng also attended the lecture.

Firstly, Ms. Li talked about her work experience related to human rights, particularly her 18 years’ work in diplomatic service. Then she shared her knowledge on the UN work on human rights. She introduced the whole framework, including the human rights institutions and the treaty bodies.

Next, Ms. Li attached much importance to the reformation of the UN human rights treaty bodies. These reforms include transforming the Commission of Human Rights into one of the UN charter bodies, bringing the human rights treaty bodies into the International Human Rights Court etc.. The latest reform refers to transformation of human rights into the goals of sustainable development.

At last, Ms. Li presented her current work in protecting the rights of people with disabilities, which started only several months ago. She gave a brief overview of the disabled people's job opportunities in China. Furthermore, she mentioned the Rehabilitation International (RI), which is a famous non-governmental organization whose long-term objective is to promote rehabilitation and provision of benefits to the disabled. Ms. Li spoke highly of this organization and its many efforts, and expressed a hope that it will play a higher role in the future.



The lecture ended with a heated discussion and sincere thanks to Ms. Li.
