Mr. Maurits Oskam visited theInstitute for Human Rights


October 27, 2016, Mr. Maurits Oskam, the Embassy of theKingdom of the Netherlands, visited the Institute for Human Rights of CUPL andgave a lecture to the students. Wei ZHANG, the Associated Professor,Co-director of the Institute and the first-year Master students attended thelecture.


The lecture includes three main topics, Human Rights inthe Netherlands, Human Rights in Dutch Foreign Policy and the Interaction.


At the first part of the lecture, Mr. Maurits Oskam sharedhis opinion that “No country without human rights issues” and took refugees,torture and violence against women as examples. Then he talked about the DutchConstitution, the political system of Netherlands and the impact of Internationallaw.


The second part of the lecture was focused on Dutch’sexternal human rights policy. According to what Mr. Maurits Oskam said we knewthat Dutch constitution expressly defined that the government shall promote thedevelopment of the international legal order and that provided legal footing toits foreign policy. And he also introduced the main themes which were widelytalked about in his country and forums related to these.


The third part was about how Netherlands interacted withother countries. Mr. Maurits Oskam referred that the bilateral meetings andmultilateral meetings are the important approaches.


Finally, there was a Q&A time before the end of thelecture to encourage a closer communication between Mr. Maurits Oskam and thestudents. Thanks so much for Mr. Maurits Oskam’s meaningful lecture and thestudents are all looking forward to his next coming.
