On the Night ofOctober 27, 2016, Yinlan XIA, the Doctorial Tutor of the Human Rights forInstitute, held a lecture named “Human Rights and Anti-Domestic Violence Law”in the Changping Campus of China University of Political Science and Law. The hostof the Forum was Wei ZHANG, associated professor, Co-director of the Institute.The Students from two campus of CUPL came keenly for the lecture.

At the very beginningof the lecture, Director Zhang made a brief introduction of the background andthe process of the making of the Chinese Anti-Domestic Violence Law, and gave abrief analysis of its function in Chinese human rights promotion.

With the warmwelcoming of the audience, Professor Xia began her lecture. The lecture mainlycontained three parts.

The first part ofthe lecture was the introduction of the domestic violence and its infringementto the human rights. Professor Xia first demonstrated her studies of thedomestic violence problems, concerned with related cases, made an impressingpresentation of the domestic violence infringement issues. She then expressedher opinion against the traditional view that legislation may not concern domesticviolence. Instead, she said, domestic violence must be regulated by law. Inaddition, Professor Xia demonstrated the main characters of the domesticviolence, and examined the causes of it. She then came to the conclusion that domesticviolence is not a personal issue; instead it is indeed a social issue. Domesticviolence, like other types of violence, is the violation of human rights.

Professor Xia thendemonstrated in her second part with the conclusion that the legislation of theAnti-Domestic Violence Law was the significant achievement of the Chinese HumanRights law. In this part, she showed the legislative progress of theAnti-Domestic Law, and the promotion of it by the development of the humanrights.

In her third andlast part, Professor Xia demonstrated the protection and application ofAnti-Domestic Law to Human Rights. She introduced the evolvement of the law,and the promotion and the application of the protection of human rights.

In the Questionand Answering part, students were active and desiring for many valuablequestions, such as domestic violence in rural areas, the legislation of sexualviolence, and the legal recognition of cold violence. Professor Xia answeredthe questions with patience and thorough explanations.

Director Zhang thenconcluded the lecture and gave his warm welcome of Professor Xia for joiningthe big family of Human Rights Institute. He encouraged more students to jointhe Institute and make contributions to Human Rights career.
