Lecture: ICRC work mechanism and its challenges (by Mr. Vincent Cassard)

September 25, 2014 -  Mr. Vincent Cassard, Deputy Head of Regional Delegation for East Asia of the ICRC (International Committee of the RedCross), visited the Institute for Human Rights of CUPL and gave a lecture to the first year master's students of human rights law.


 

At the beginning of the lecture, all students introduced themsleves and expressed a warm welcome and thanks to Mr. Vincent Cassard. After that, Mr. Cassard started his presentation.



Firstly, Mr. Cassard shared his views on what the main purpose of a humanitarian organization is. He also specified the purpose of the ICRC, which is in providing help and assistance to people suffering from violence by the armies and military forces.

 

Secondly, Mr. Cassard introduced the origins, tasks and challenges of the ICRC. Particularly, Mr. Cassard noted that protection, assistance, prevention and cooperation are the major activities of the ICRC.  No weapons, dialogue, confidentiality constitute the modus operandi of the ICRC. When talking about the principles of the ICRC, Mr. Cassard referred to four of them: humanity, impartiality, neutrality and independence. Besides that, Mr. Cassard also presented the development of the ICRC emblem.

 

During the discussion that followed, Mr.Cassard addressed such issues as: financial support of the ICRC, protection of the ICRC employees and other issues related to human rights.


 

Throughout this wonderful lecture, students had an opportunity to get a better insight into the ICRC. The materials provided by Mr. Cassard can become a good source for their future research. All in all, the students benefited a lot from the great lecture.
