On the morning of September 27, 2018, the 341th Global Human Rights Forum lecture was held at A209 of China University of Political Science and Law. The Institute for Human Rights invited Professor Wang Xu from Renmin University of China to give a lecture for teachers and students. The lecturer Wang Liwan, Yang Bochao, Zhang Chong and Shi Hui attended the lecture.
In this lecture, Professor Wang Xu pointed out that thesis writing often differs due to the author's temperaments, writing intentions, knowledge structure and other factors, but in special academic community, after long-term accumulation and inheritance in the academic circle, although academic evaluation is relative, there are general bottom lines and relatively objective standards. Therefore, in the modern academic system, it is necessary to have a sense of responsibility for academic creation, and to study academic norms such as literature review and citations earnestly.
Then, Professor Wang Xu combined his own experience to introduce the jurisprudence community's evaluation criteria for an excellent paper from five aspects.
First, the paper should have awareness of problems. The article should be developed around a core issue that should be presented in an independent way.
Second, the problem should be able to impress yourself, not from the influence of others. In the early stages of thesis creation, academic beginners often write through imitation, but in the long run, they are easy to rely on academic authorities. The creator should always reflect on whether the original intention of the research question has an endogenous creative impulse, which determines whether it can be consistent in the study of this core issue.
Third, the problem consciousness should be realistic. Scholars should be caring for the times and environments in which they live. The generation of problem consciousness should not be merely an emergency, low-end sensory response, such as the analysis of real-life cases, but an anxiety about social structural problems and a natural reaction to academic accumulation.
Fourth, thesis writing requires the preparation of materials. On the one hand, there must be strategic planning, and for the problems that you want to control and solve, you need to accumulate and think in the relevant fields for a long time. On the other hand, tactical reading can be carried out. For the writing of dogmatics of law, it is necessary to pay attention to the reading of legislative materials, principles based on legislative materials, comparative law materials, cases and other materials. For the study of others, if we study the ideas and concepts, we must find the theoretical basis, repeat intensive reading and experience. If it is interdisciplinary research, you should familiarize yourself with the basic literature related to another subject.
Fifth, pay attention to the writing of literature review. The literature review mainly records the viewpoints of the paper and the viewpoints of the academic circles. Its role is to clarify the contributions of the predecessors and the position of the authors, and to help the readers to understand the context of the article and to inspire the reader.
After listening to the lecture, lecturer Wang Liwan and students consulted Professor Wang Xu on the diversification and the specific topic of the thesis. Professor Wang Xu patiently answered the questions and made suggestions. Finally, the lecture ended with a warm applause from everyone.
