On the morning of June 7th, 2018, Professor Zou Xiaoqiao was invited to the institute for human rights of China University of Political Science and Law to gave a wonderful lecture entitled "The Protection of Women's Rights Under International Human Rights Documents" for graduate students.
Professor Zou is a dean of the Institute of Modern Women's Leadership. She was the Minister of International Affairs of the All-China Women's Federation, the Standing Director of the China Society for Human Rights Studies, and a member of the United Nations Association of China. As an independent expert, Professor Zou has served on the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for 12 years and served as vice chairman of the committee from 2009 to 2010. Prof. Zou Xiaoqiao has been a member of the Chinese government delegation on many occasions to participate in meetings of the United Nations and regional issues related to human rights, women, and other social issues. She has long been engaged in the promotion of women’s human rights, gender equality and women’s rights. She has unique opinion of women’s rights.
In this lecture, Professor Zou spoke about the history of the protection of women’s rights that has received widespread attention from the international community. She then introduced the UN’s core human rights conventions and their institutions. She also gave a brief explanation of the current status of China’s ratification and accession to core human rights treaties and its compliance status. Most importantly, Professor Zou specifically taught the students about the background and main content of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, as well as the grievance procedures and investigation procedures involved in the Optional Protocol to the Convention, and adopted typical cases. The form tells everyone about the operation of specific procedures in practice.
Through Professor Zou 's teaching, the students have a clear understanding of the international framework for the protection of women’s rights and are also willing to actively participate in the academic research and practice of women’s rights protection in China. In the end, Prof. Zou took a group photo with the students and the lecture ended successfully.
