The 4th Human Rights Summer Course of CUPL ended successfully
 The fourth “Human Rights Summer Course of CUPL” was held as scheduled in the academic lecture hall of the university library from July 9th, 2012 to July 20th, 2012.

This course has attracted students from all over the country. In addition to students from our university, the course also attracted students from 34 different universities, such as Wuhan University, Sichuan University, Sandong University, Guangzhou University, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Northwest University of Political Science and Law, East China University of Political science and Law, Beijing Foreign Studies University, Minzu University of China, Huazhong Normal University, among others. Additionally, there were four foreign students in this year’s course. They are from Utrecht University in The Netherlands and University of Desuto in Spain.

Human Rights Summer Course is divided into two parts: "international human rights treaties and its supervising mechanism” and “the legal protection of human rights". The experts and scholars introduced human rights mainly from the perspectives of philosophical rights of Confucianism, the UN human rights and China, constitutionalism in China, right to life, economic, social and cultural rights, national human rights institutions, the European human rights protection mechanisms and other related perspectives.

The experts and scholars who attended the summer course are well known nationally and internationally. They provided students with wonderful opportunities to further understand the concepts and ideals of human rights. The experts and scholars are: Ambassador Chen Shiqiu, expert of the UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee; Professor Bai Guimei from Peking University; Professor Li Shuzhong, Profossor Zheng Yongliu, Professor Xia Yinlan, Professor Wang Renbo and Professor Shan Chun from CUPL. Foreign experts and scholars are Professor Gudmundur Alfredsson, former director of Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law of Lunds University in Sweden; Professor Jan Wouters, director of Institute of International Law of Katholieke Universiteit Leuven; Profesor Paul Finkelman, President William McKinley’s distinguished professor;Professor Brian Burdekin, former federal member of the Australian Human Rights Commission;Professor Jaime Alberto March á n Romoer and Professor María Rocío Barahona Riera from Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights;Professor Zdzislaw Kedzia, the chairman of constitutional law of Adam Mickiewicz University;Professor Lech Garlicki, vice president of the European Court of Human Rights;Professor Jean-Paul Jacque, special advisor and honorary director of The Council of the European Union;Professor Florence Benoit-Rohmer, honorary president of University of Strasbourg and secretary general of Human rights and Democracy Center between European Universities.

In addition to the formal lectures on human rights knowledge and interactive communications with participants made by both Chinese and foreign experts and scholars, Professor Gudmundur Alfredsson spent nearly 1/3 of the time at the beginning of the lectures to let more than 120 students introduce themselves one by one, in order to convey the idea that communication and understanding between people is very important, and to respect and guarantee human rights. Human rights is not something that could only be taught by the teacher, but also should be learned from the students.

Professor Paul Finkelman also recognized and highly appreciated the outstanding academic performances by the participating students. He was encouraged by the high levels of enthusiasm demonstrated by the students and the communication between them was even greater.  During Question and Answer period, the students put forward many inquisitive and thoughtful questions. They have the courage to face the challenges and voiced their opinions related to the professor’s lecture material, minor disagreements and doubts on the material were even more meaningful and constructive.

After two weeks of human rights law courses, at 5:00 PM on July 20th, 2012, Professor Gudmundur Alfredsson, Professor Brian Burdekin, Professor Zdzislaw Kedzia, Professor Lech Garlicki, Professor Jean - Paul Jacque, Professor Florence Benoit - Rohmer and Professor zhang Wei, executive vice president of Human Rights Institute, issued certificates to the participants of these courses. The participants communicated with professors and took photos together. Under the witness of the camera flash, the fourth “Human Rights Summer Course of CUPL” was brought to a successful close.
