March 20th, 2014 - At 2:30 p.m., Ms. LI Sangu, the officer of the UNHCR Regional Representation office in China, visited the Institute for Human Rights again, and gave a lecture in Room A1012 of the Scientific Research Building. Professor ZHANG Wei and eight master's students from the institute attended the lecture.
During her talk Ms. LI introduced the procedures and criteria for determining refugee status. First, she explained the exclusion and cessation clauses to complete the theory structure. Then she talked about some skills and precautions, which should be carefully considered during the registration and interview process. For example, posing questions in different styles from open-ended to quite targeted queries is considered both appropriate and effective. Staff at the UNHCR are responsible for keeping the related information in confidence - unless the applicants approve of their disclosure to third parties. In addition, Ms. LI presented copies of "Asylum-Seeker Certification" and "Refugee Certification" as samples. Students learned how to identify them by looking for particular security papers and special codes.
