Lecture: Safeguard Womens Human Rights from an International Perspective (by Zou Xiaoqiao at Well-known Expert Forum)

December 12th, 2013 - At 7:00 p.m., Ms. ZOU Xiaoqiao took part in the 134th session of the Well-known Expert Forum at CUPL.

ZOU once served as the former director-general of the International Liaison Department at the ACWF, and held the post of vice chairperson of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), from 2009 to 2010.

Her lecture "Safeguard of Women's Human Rights from an International Perspective" was held in Room A211 of the Scientific Research Building. The Department of Scientific Research and the Institute for Human Rights co-operated to hold the event, with Professor ZHANG Wei acting as event chair.

Ms. ZOU showed that protection of women's human rights has gone through considerable progress from marginalization to mainstreaming in international society. Now, the UN has many related mechanisms and agencies like the Committee on the Status of Women and the CEDAW. Ms. ZOU introduced the main provisions of the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women and its optical protocol. She also explained the implementation issues with vivid case examples and data from her rich working experience with the CEDAW. Students of different majors openly discussed with Ms. ZOU the issues of gender equality in education, employment and other aspects.
