Lecture: The implementation of Convention against torture in China (by Prof. Gong Renren)

March 10, 2016-Prof. Gong Renren of the Peking University visited the Institute for Human Rights and gave a lecture to the first-year Master's Students and several Ph.D. Students. Sun Meng, associate Professor also attended the lecture and had a good interaction with Prof. Gong. The lecture is about “The implementation of Convention against torture in China”.

Firstly,Prof. Gong introduced the situation about Convention against torture in China, he especially explained the definition of torture in detail. Then, Prof. Gong explained the situation of torture in China and he also gave some examples to illustrate that the implementation of torture shall have local interpretation, such as abusing of rights should be able to appeal, applying criminal torture shall be subject to criminal penalties etc.. However, China has no relevant provisions and the difference of compensation is large. Combining the international law and the domestic law, the implementation of the UNDP Human Rights Treaty inChina can not be found in any case because of lacking of performance mechanism.Lastly, Prof. Gong gave students some time to ask questions. The Master Students and several Ph.D. Students had a positive communication with Prof.Gong, such as Dr. Jin Shijing, she questioned the implementation sequence of people's livelihood rights and high-end human rights, Sun Zhen asked the relationship between China's judicial reform and judicial independence inrecent years.

During a heated discussion, the lecture ended successfully, our students have said that they benefit a lot from the lecture.
