November23, 2017, Professor Chen Shiqiu, Vice president of the United Nations Association of China, former ambassador of the Ministry of foreign affairs, expert of the UN Human Rights Sub-committee, and vice president of China Human Rights Research Association, was invited to give lectures to the 2017 graduate students of Institute for Human Rights, the topic was about United Nations human rights treaty bodies.
The content of the lecture was divided into three parts: the role and significance of human rights treaty bodies; the existing problems and challenges and how to improve and enhance the effectiveness of human rights treaty bodies.
In the part of the existing problems and challenges of human rights treaty bodies, Professor Chen introduced his experience and thoughts as a member of the UN Human Rights Subcommittee. The problems are mainly as fellows: the lack of a complete rule, the enlargement of chairman's conference rights and the heavy burden of Member States .
At the same time, Professor Chen gave students some suggestions about how to improve the effectiveness of human rights treaty bodies, like Strengthening the follow-up actions and promoting the full participation of NGO, which were enlightening and constructive.
At the end of the lecture, Professor Chen encouraged students to ask questions positively. Students put forward the questions, about the operation mechanism and daily work of treaty bodies, which have been patiently resolved by Professor Chen.
Three hours of lectures ended in a relaxed atmosphere, all the students are looking forward to Professor Chen's next visit.
