March 7th, 2014 - Ms. Xiangfei Qu, Associate Professor of the Chinese Academy of Social Science, gave a lecture on the right to education. While comparing Chinese education to the international human rights law, she pointed out the problems of the current Chinese system, such as the lack of guidance and regulations for private education, the unbalanced development and distribution of resources, the mark adding policy with respect to factors of nationalities and regions, enrollment of migrant children, and higher education’s reluctance to accept the disabled etc.
During the lecture Ms. Qu advocated the idea that the right to education is the base for both personal self-fulfillment and social progress. She also expressed the idea that when considering projects and reforms on educational development the Chinese government should bear in mind the population’s growing expectations in educational and cultural life, and also the compliance with international obligations and commitments, according to the CESCR and the General Comments of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and other international human rights policies and practice.
