December 10, 2014 - the celebration of the anniversary of the Human Rights Day was held in the academic lecture hall. The theme of this activity was labeled "Human Rights 365". Professor Ban Wenzhan, Vice President of the Institute for Human Rights, Professor Sun Meng, Professor Xu Shuang, Professor Yang Qinhuo and Li Ruoyu attended the celebration. Besides, master's students of Human Rights Law and students majoring in other subjects also attended the activity.
The event was divided into two parts.The first part aimed at reviving the theme of the 2014 Human Rights Day. Specifically, a movie "Hart's War" was played to the audience. Several students from different institutes joined the activity and watched the movie together.
The second part started at 6 p.m. after the movie. The activity started with a movie discussion which fro the perspective of human rights questions reflected in the movie. Prof. Ban Wenzhan delivered an opening speech. First, he gave a warm welcome to all the professors and students who attended the event. Then he introduced the history of the Human Rights Day and reiterated the significance of the celebration of this day. Finally, he praised the unique form of celebration this year and the students who organized the event.
Afterwards, the hosts played a short video of the speech in commemoration of the Human Rights Day by the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Then, student Wang Yuan gave a short review of the movie "Hart’s War". Taking the film as a foundation, professors and students based their discussion on four main points:
the Genva Convention relative to the Treatment of Prisoners of War;
the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination;
the court procedure of the US military tribunal;
individual justice and national interests.
Besides human rights law students, several students from other institutes of CUPL joined the discussion and held short speeches.
After the discussion, Professor Sun Meng, and Professor Yang Qinhuo gave short comments on the human rights principles and the international human rights law.
In the end, Professor Xu Shuang held a closing speech of the event.
The commemorative celebration ended with a group photo of all participants.
